Boulder ( And Beyond ) Vegan Meetup Group
Check out the Boulder ( and Beyond ) Vegan Meetup Group that gathers once a month for great pot luck dinners restaurant outings , game nights, recipe exchanges, and meeting other vegans. You do not have to be vegan, or even vegetarian to attend ! This is not a singles thing, families are warmly welcome. The organizers, Lisa Shapiro and Travis Nicholson, make sure everyone is taken care of and the event runs smoothly. I have attended several so far, including the 4th Annual Holiday Cookie/Bar/Cupcake Exchange in December. What a treat to see tables covered with tons of lovingly homemade baked goodies ( including a gluten-free table ! ) and know that they have been made without animal suffering. Nice :)
Vegetarian Society of Colorado becomes Vegan Life Colorado
The Vegetarian Society of Colorado was established way back in 1975 ! It is now called Vegan Life Colorado, and still just as cool :) They have gatherings, pot lucks and host the annual Vegfest Colorado , which I was able to go to last June ( 2011 ) not long after Jamie and I moved here. This awesome event included food samplings, cooking demos, tabling by local veg-centric organizations and animal sanctuaries. The keynote speaker was Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, author of numerous cookbooks, inspiring podcasts and tireless advocate for the animals. Can't wait to see what their line-up is this year , which takes place on July 7th and 8th in Golden....don't miss it !
Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary
The Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary website is worth going to just to view the beautiful photography and read the incredible essays on animals' lives by Joanna Lucas. After that, read about the importance of the heartbreaking work that Michele and Chris Alley-Grubb have been doing since 1997: rescuing farm animals, most of which come from small, family-run farms...not the huge factory farms. Animal abuse happens whenever and wherever animals are used as commodities. From their website : "Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary is made up of a core group of highly committed people who have extensive expertise in education, outreach, and animal care. We combine our abilities to provide a safe and peaceful home for deserving animals while constantly creating innovative ways to speak out for the largest number of abused animals in the world, farmed animals."
